Training of trainers “ didactics and pedagogics
Within the framework of Rwandan-German development cooperation, a Training of Trainers “Didactics and Pedagogy” (Unit 1 and Unit 2) has been developed. The training is embedded in a (human) capacity development package, which in turn forms part of the program Eco Employ, assigned to the Sustainable Economic Development priority area in Rwanda. Support to technical and vocational training, labor market interventions, and development of the private sector aims at fostering the sectors ICT, timber, tourism, and creative industries. In the context of Training of Trainers, a generic training concept has been elaborated to serve as a basic orientation for training design and implementation as such. The revised generic concept is exemplarily applied in the context of any new training course. These trainings are implemented in cooperation with the international experts, aiming at supporting trainers of NISR and from the National statistical system in the preparation and implementation of training.
Learning objectives
The training offers the opportunity to generally strengthen the competencies in the planning and implementation of training courses. Most prominently, the participants will
- discuss first practice experiences in dealing with new training approaches;
- clarify open questions;
- complete their tool boxes in the fields of training planning;
- refine the competence to conduct interactive training;
- become aware of methodical basics in training big groups;
- deepen their knowledge in the design of training materials;
- elaborate a guide for training evaluation;
- Practice training procedures in the light of new knowledge and receive feedback.
Content and approach to work
The generic training concept module for 5 days. The curriculum facilitates the organization of the learning process: it explains different modules and contents, gives structure to the time, and defines the intervals of actions. The curriculum takes into account the learners’ own experiences, describes their activities in the course of the training, and determines the relationship between theory and practice. Hence: it has to be decided in which way training contents should be treated: in terms of a linear curriculum, as an open or closed curriculum, or in the form of a spiral curriculum.
The follow-up training for 5 days, and its content includes:
- The explanation/application of activating / interactive methods and tools will provide for diversity.
- Small exercises, brief group discussions, and micro-methods will take place in the plenary.
- By means of interactive teaching conversations, the elaboration of texts in groups, and the practical application, new contents will be conveyed.
- Work in working groups will occur according to the approach of a (semi) fictitious case study. This way the participants will continue elaborating their training modules -or specific sequences/aspects of them – in their own training script. The contents of those training sequences will be selected from the following compilation:
- Survey and/ Census Organization and Data Analysis. For all surveys and censuses;
- Training of survey enumerators and approach for quality data collection, organized by all units for all surveys and censuses;
- Data Dissemination and visualization techniques, organized by dissemination team;
- SDG data monitoring and reporting, organized by dissemination team and NSS coordination and capacity building team;
Selection of additional topics planned in the near future:
- Big Data analytics and applications;
- Techniques and application of statistical software(s) such as Python, STATA, and R-Programming
- Prepared templates and worksheets (planning tools) will be used and adapted in facilitated sessions according to their suitability for the training center of NISR.
- In the context of the (simulated) execution of concrete training sequences, the participants will increase their confidence in action.
- Considerations at the meta-level will encourage reflections on possible challenges that trainers might be facing in the course of training development and implementation.
